Entrepreneur IQ (Inspirational Quote) this week is by Abraham Lincoln. Lincoln is an inspirational leader not only for his vision as President but also for the obstacles in life he overcame. He is one of the leading examples of persistence in the face of adversity.
“Always bear in mind that your own Resolution to Succeed is more important than any other one thing.” – Abraham Lincoln
Lincoln had many setbacks but his resolve to succeed resulted in some major successes:
1816 Lincoln Family forced out of their home and he had to work at a young age to support them.
1818 His mother passed away.
1831 Failed attempt in Business Venture.
1832 Lost his run for State Legislature, lost his job, application to law school rejected.
1833 Borrowed money to begin another business but went bankrupt.
1834 Ran for state legislature again – won (finally something went right!).
1835 Fiance died before they got married.
1836 Had a complete nervous breakdown and was in bed for six months.
1837 Received license to practice law and joined law partnership.
1838 Failed attempt to become speaker of the state legislature.
1840 Failed attempt to become elector.
1843 Defeated for nomination for Congress.
1846 Successfully Elected to Congress.
1848 Ran for re-election to Congress – lost.
1849 Failed attempt to become Land Officer in his home state.
1854 Lost his run for Senate of the United States.
1856 Sought Vice-Presidential nomination, got less than 100 votes.
1858 Lost his 2nd run for US Senate.
1860 Elected president of the United States.
You know the rest of the story!
Take a moment to think about what challenges you have overcome and keep that in your mind as a reminder towards your future success. Set some lofty goals and be persistent in your pursuit of success, you may surprise yourself at how much you can accomplish. Lincoln had many reasons to give up and wallow in self-pity. After each setback he found the resolve and courage to keep going and working towards his goals, you can do the same.
Our challenge to you today is to take time to consider if you are being as persistent as you can be and keeping a positive outlook despite any setbacks you encounter in your business (or your life).
